Betway Manchester United Deal Set for 2026/27 Season

The latest industry news is highlighted by the landmark Betway Manchester United deal, a multi-year agreement making the Super Group brand the club's principal partner from the 2026/27 season. In other global developments, Wynn Resorts has confirmed a new September 2027 opening for its Al Marjan Island resort in the UAE, while in South Africa, the fight against illegal gambling remains in an advocacy phase despite a significant push for reform.

Betway Inks Landmark Manchester United Partnership

Manchester United has secured a significant multi-year sponsorship with Betway, a prominent brand under Super Group. This new partnership designates Betway as the club’s official principal partner and its exclusive global betting partner. The agreement, representing Betway's largest sponsorship investment to date, is set to commence with the 2026/27 Premier League season.

The Betway Manchester United deal will see the betting brand's logo featured on the training kits for both the men's and women's teams. However, due to the Premier League's incoming ban on gambling sponsorships on the front of shirts, Betway’s branding will not appear there. The brand will still maintain high visibility at Old Trafford and the club’s training facility, the Progress with Unity Stadium.

Fans can anticipate enhanced engagement opportunities through various activations, including exclusive competitions and unique experiences. This move mirrors other clubs' strategies, such as Aston Villa's recent prize draw partnership with Winvia Entertainment.

A Strategic and High-Value Agreement

According to sources cited by the NY Times, this partnership could be worth more than £18 million, ranking it among the most expensive deals of its kind in football. The agreement underscores the club's commercial growth and international appeal.

“The scale of our exciting new partnership reflects our growth strategy and enduring global strength,” said Marc Armstrong, Manchester United’s Chief Business Officer, highlighting how the deal will help accelerate Betway's global ambitions.

For Super Group, the deal aligns perfectly with its strategic goals. CEO Neal Menashe noted the synergy between the club's fanbase, especially in Africa, and Betway's key markets. Betway has a strong history of Premier League involvement, having previously held a front-of-shirt deal with West Ham that ended in 2025 and maintaining other sponsorships with clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City.

Wynn Resorts Pushes UAE Opening to September 2027

While Betway expands in the UK, Wynn Resorts faces revised timelines in the United Arab Emirates. The company confirmed during its Q2 earnings call that the opening of its Wynn Al Marjan Island resort in Ras Al Khaimah has been moved to September 2027. The integrated resort was initially planned for a March 2027 launch.

The delay is attributed to regional conflict in the Middle East, which led to a temporary suspension of work in February. These geopolitical issues have disrupted shipping channels and supply chains, increasing project costs. Despite these challenges, construction resumed in March after enhanced safety measures were implemented.

Investment and Confidence Remain High

Wynn Resorts has demonstrated its commitment by injecting approximately $1.06 billion in cash to date for the project, in which it holds a 40% stake. During the last quarter alone, it contributed $48.1 million.

“What we are building in the region is one of a kind and the quality of work on site is truly extraordinary. We continue to believe this will be the most exciting integrated resort opening globally in over a decade,” stated Wynn CEO Craig Billings, expressing strong confidence in the UAE market.

Wynn was the first company to receive a commercial gaming license in the UAE and currently remains the only operator with a land-based license. The company anticipates a market with a GGR between $3 billion and $5 billion, even accounting for potential competitors in the future.

South Africa's Battle with Illegal Gambling Continues

In South Africa, the Association of South African Bookmakers (SABA) is clarifying its position on tackling illegal gambling South Africa. CEO Sean Coleman stated that efforts are still largely in the “advocacy and stakeholder engagement phase” and that recent calls for reform were meant to fuel policy discussion, not to suggest imminent legislative changes.

The scale of the problem is vast. A Yield Sec report commissioned by SABA estimated that illegal operators command 62% of all online gambling activity, diverting over R50 billion in GGR offshore annually. The report also found that approximately 16 million South Africans have used illegal platforms in the last year.

A Multi-Layered Enforcement Strategy

SABA advocates for a comprehensive approach rather than a single solution. The association has proposed six legislative interventions that would require a coordinated effort between multiple government bodies. The goal is to make South Africa a more difficult market for illegal offshore operators.

Coleman emphasized that technology, while crucial, is not a “silver bullet.” A positive step is the National Gambling Board’s (NGB) recent call for expressions of interest from providers who can monitor and block illegal websites. However, Coleman stressed that website blocking must be combined with payment blocking and consumer education to be truly effective.

“This is not a debate about protecting licensed operators from competition. It is about ensuring that South African consumers receive the protections parliament intended when it created our regulated gambling framework,” Coleman concluded.
