A forced bet is a required action that the players have to take for the game to begin. Forced bets are mainly used in poker and come in the form of blinds, antes, or bring-in rules.

The main purpose of forced bets is to motivate the players to take a more active approach. Because they have money on the line from the start, they are encouraged to play instead of just folding each round until the right hand comes their way.

For example, in a Texas Hold’em limit game, the forced bet is often a symbolic amount, usually half the size of the lowest betting limit.
