Freeroll Meaning – Poker Tournaments Free to Enter but Offering Real Prizes
The term freeroll can refer to several terms, both closely tied to poker. “Freeroll” is mostly used in the context of freeroll tournaments.
These tournaments offer poker players real-world prizes or money but don’t require any monetary compensation from the players in order to participate in them.
The second thing that the term freeroll refers to are heads-up situations when two players have similar hole cards. More specifically, a player who is freerolling is in the position to either win or split the pot but has no chance of losing.
For example, if the community board reads 3, 4, 5, 6 and each player has a 5,6 hand, both have two pairs and split the pot.
However, if one player has a suited hand with two matching suits on the board, they can make a flush hand on the river. So, they can only win or tie and have no potential cost for seeing the game through to the end.
