Overlay Meaning – Improved Odds or Extra Money Added to the Prize Pool
The term overlay can have several meanings. Firstly, the term overlay is used in the context of overlay odds.
These are the odds that are better than they generally should be, meaning that the player benefits more than the casino.
Other than that, the overlay can also refer to the money added to the prize pool by the organizer if the prize pool is larger than what all of the buy-ins contributed.
For example, if a poker tournament has a prize pool of $100,000 and the total buy-in amount ends up at $80,000, the organizer will have to add another $20,000 to cover the difference. In this case, the $20,000 is the overlay.
