Underdog Meaning – A Player Not Likely to Win the Hand or the Round

An underdog is a player who is not favored to win the hand. The underdog is the opposite of a favorite, a player who is statistically expected to win the hand. This casino slang term is commonly used in poker.

For example, let’s say that you have a 10, J hand, your opponent has an 8, 9 hand, and the flop reads 7, 8, 9.

In this situation, with two community cards remaining, you are the favorite in most hands, while your opponent is the underdog. This doesn’t mean that they don’t have some outs to help them win, only that you’ll likely win in almost every scenario.
